Domes - Project Blog Post
Summary: This project was when we had to create a dome prototype to replace the Metrodome roof after it collapsed. Ours was made out of paper mache and withstood over 80 pounds (when the passing grade was roughly 1/3 of a pound).
Backward-Looking: How much did you know about the subject before we started? I knew virtually nothing about domes aside from the fact that they were used as for an aesthetic appeal in the Roman era, and that the only thing domes really did "OK" at was providing a roof over one's head and of course, looking pretty. I didn't know the proper term of a geodesic dome (domes that have geometric shapes that make up a rough dome form and distribute stress throughout the entire shape) and I didn't know anything about the Metrodome or the roof collapsing.
Inward-Looking: How do you feel about this piece of work? What parts of it do you particularly like/dislike? Why? What did/do you enjoy about this piece/work? I don't particularly care for the dome, but at the same time, I don't hate it. I'm a little bit proud of it, especially because we used paper mache and aluminum/copper wire and we happened to be the only group with that only combination. Not just that, but I did end up plastering the dome with our flour mixture (which was our paper mache glue) and so it turned out really soggy while building (but when it set up it was really hard).
Outward-Looking: If someone else were looking at the piece, what might they learn about who you are? If someone else was looking at our finished piece, I think they would learn that I am kind of messy when it comes to building with paper mache. I'm not too sure what else they would learn from me, especially since we didn't paint our dome or anything like that (though our math teacher would've liked for us to paint the dome to look like the Rick Moranis version of Darth Vader from Spaceballs).
Forward-Looking: What would you like to spend more time on in school? I would like to explore toxicology, as I am considering that as a career option (I read that if I wanted to become a toxicologist, I should start going into the chemistry field in college).
Image Link: To an optimist, the glass is half full. To a pessimist, the glass is half empty. To an engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.
